EdTechTalk #32 - Elgg and Nuvvo...

The EdTechTalk #32 - Elgg and Nuvvo... podcast is worth a listen.

Note the reference to nuvvo a new, free online LMS. I wonder what the Archer folks will think of that.

Community of Practice [Marketing]

Yesterday I participated in a very interesting community of practice at Archer College. The community was focussed on the task of stuffing 2880 envelopes with three pieces of paper. Just after my second papercut I 'noticed' the name on one of the letters, so I made a phone call.

That got me thinking - [DANGER: This might hurt your brain as much as it did mine]

I 'notice' a lot of communities of practice as I float around the Web2.0 universe. Sometimes I 'connect' with them and participate. What would happen if a smart marketer monitored the blogosphere for pain or interest points and chimed in (respectfully) with (helpful and relevant) suggestions for products and services?

UPDATE: If my idea is an example of 'LongTail Marketing' check this:
http://mashable.com/2005/11/23/google-testing-click-to-call-ads/

This is really all about the long tail of advertising - the vast majority of small businesses don’t have a website, but they do have a phone. Adwords is of no use to these businesses, but click-to-call is perfect. Google will soon be in a position to profit from every single small business, opening up a whole new stream of revenue. Will that stock price ever stop rising?

Could Archer drink more software from the tap?

While listening to the 'Software on Tap' episode of Steve Gillmor's 'Attention Tech' podcast I got to thinking. What type of Software as a Service is already out there that we could / should be using. I wondered if my recent experience booking accommodation in Melbourne actually used an underlying service provided by Rearden Commerce.

In any case, with all the expense and hassle of getting (and keeping) IT systems running in-house, we would be foolish not to exploit all the good 'Software as Service' offerings we can.

One of the pioneers in that space is Rearden Commerce, a provider of service that hundreds of thousands of people already use to outsource administrative tasks such as booking flights or restaurants or ordering commodity items such as office supplies

Final 'Proof Of Concept' PodCast at LDR

Tina - I think this might be useful to Archer_College_Today.

Fun and Adventures with John....

What do I do on my day off, now the footy is over?

Here I am shark wrestling to relax.Shark2

We always throw the small ones, and also the one’s longer than the boat, back.

Janine was facing the shark from behind the camera.

Lunch was fish, that night we ate fresh calamari with rice, chillie sauce and fresh samphire, and then we had crab omelet  for breakfast. It was tough but one has to celebrate eight hours a day.

So it is a relief to get back to work

Cheers John

To be or not to be.....

Picked up an article on the blogospshere from Westchester County Business Journal regarding the increase of on line learning for the higher education market and the involvement of not for profit organisations supporting this increase. We've known this for some time at Archer College and are very fortunate to be at the forefront of elearning technology and to do this we implement a cost effective, world class system to deliver. However our philosophy is not about the technology, it's about engaging and supporting people with their continuing education requirements anywhere, anytime and yes it is accessed for a fee.

Archer College is a for profit organisation, but there is more depth to our profile than this. We support/sponsor our Learndog community too, our not for profit organisation. Learndog is a vehicle for our blogpodding youth to share and express their imaginations and ideas, check it out.

Listen and discuss - eLearning 2.0 and YOU (Stephen Downes)

OK Team,
This is important. Make time to listen to Stephen Downes latest podcast 'What E-Learning 2.0 means To You' given to a bunch of corporate eLearning types (not academics). Same stuff, different spin - very important.

Emily, Anna, Phil, Mark and Tina I want to see each of you post at least one impression of what this means to you in the context of Archer. I wanna read discussion on things like:

Web2.0 - creating vs consuming the web.

Content - connecting with chaotic content vs giving controlled content

Things/Events vs Flow

Personal learning centre vs LMS/CMS

The New internet

Quoted from Phil:

Everyone really should know what the internet is. Mostly because you are using it right now. The internet it everything that you could ever want and more. The problem is that it is more. There is too much information on the internet and people do not want to know everything they want to know stuff that is important to them.
